1. Shampoo

Scalp care is a very important part of your hair regimen. A healthy scalp promotes healthy hair. The primary purpose of cleansing is to extract dirt, product build-up, and oil from the scalp. Use shampoos that don’t contain sodium sulphate. Get into the routine of washing your hair at least once a week.

When you cleanse focus on your scalp, apply the shampoo to the scalp using your fingertips working the products from the roots to the ends. Take the time to massage your scalp, which promotes hair growth. It is essential to use a moisturizing conditioner after cleansing to add moisture.

For a deep-cleansing. Use a clarifying shampoo at least once a month. Use after swimming, heavy styling products and before and after protective style.

2.  Moisturizing Conditioner

Moisture is the key to keep your hair healthy and strong. Conditioning your hair is a fundamental part of a healthy hair regimen. Conditioner closes the hair cuticle, making it simpler to finger detangle/combing.

Always divide your hair into four sections. I urge you finger detangling to remove any knots or tangles. Start from the ends working your way up to the roots. After if desired, use a wide-tooth comb. Apply conditioner to re-soften the hair before applying the shampoo.

*Favorite Moisturizing Conditioners (budget-friendly)

  • Garnier Whole Blends Replenishing Conditioner.
  • OGX Renewing Argan Oil of Morocco Conditioner.
  • Tresemme Botanique Conditioner.

3.  Deep Conditioning Treatment

A deep conditioning mask is an intensive conditioning treatment that those with all hair types should do. The deep treatment heals, restores and penetrates into the hair cuticle. Giving the hair a long-lasting conditioning effect.

I recommended that you deep condition once a week for up to 20-45 minutes or as much as you can. You can use a heating cap, a hooded dryer to maximize the product.

A little conditioner goes a long way!

4. Leave-In Conditioner

Keeping your hair moisturized is important. A leave-in conditioner is essential to apply after cleansing and conditioning the hair. The purpose is to promote hair moisture while reducing breakage.

Remember to squeeze the excess water and apply your leave-in conditioner while in the shower can be more efficient. I add half a teaspoon of my favourite leave in a spray bottle for daily moisturizing.

5.  Protein Treatment

Hair is made up of a protein called keratin. Protein treatment prevents breakage and adds strength to damaged hair. Try a protein treatment if your hair is dry, brittle, and experiencing breakage/split ends. For starters, you can use a simple shampoo/conditioner with protein.

I suggest using a light/medium (ApHogee Intense Two Minutes Keratin Reconstructor) protein treatment every 3-6 weeks.

Stronger protein treatments like an ApHogee two-step protein a heavy protein. I suggest to every 6-8 months. Remember to listen to your hair! Be careful, not to overuse protein. Using too much protein may cause breakage.

6.  Trim

Trimming your hair is essential, one of the easiest ways to give your hair an instant, healthier look. Trims will prevent split ends, frizz, and breakage.

If, you plan on doing the trim yourself. I recommend doing the research before or seeking professional advice. The first part, get the right tools (sharp hair shears.) I trim my hair every 6-8 months.

7.  Protective Styling

Protective styling/low maintenance is any style that reduces hair combing or manipulation. The benefits of protective styles are to protect your hair from elements preventing breakage.

Examples of protective hairstyles: Flat twist style, updos, braid outs, Bantu knots, buns, box Braids, cornrow, etc.

8.  Heat Reduction

Reducing heat is another essential part of your natural hair journey. You should not ignore this part. Avoid using direct heat (blow-dryer). We use heat from time to time. But when you apply heat, please apply a heat good quality heat protectant.

Substitute the blow-dryer (direct heat) for a hooded dryer (indirect heat) is the best thing you can do for your natural hair.

Air drying is one of the safest methods to dry your hair. However, it can take longer to dry when using styling products.

My hooded dryer is the master of hair tools!!

9. Nighttime Hair Care

Care for your hair while you sleep. Cotton pillowcases are abrasive to your hair and suck the moisture from our hair. I suggest you invest in a good quality satin pillowcase or scarf.
